The Gowk Stane - Gowk stane in scots means the stone of the 'cuckoo' or 'fool'.
Gowk's day, the scottish April Fool's Day, originally held on 13th April when the cuckoo begins to call. Children were sent on a Gowk Hunt, a harmless prank involving pointless errands.
It is likely that the Gowk Stane had some part to play in the April Fool/Beginning of Spring Rituals.
Legend has it that the Cumbrae Gowk Stane - also called the Devil's Cast - was tossed over from Bute by an ogre/troll.
The Gowk Stane is situated on the Fintry Bay Walk which is one of Cumbrae's many walks.
You can start your walk at the Harbour Pier, walking up towards the golf course, enjoying the beautiful scenery of Cumbrae, and magnificent views of Bute, Arran and further a field on a clear day. Then after finding the cache, continue to Fintry Bay Tea Rooms for a well deserved rest and refreshments before continuing the rest of the walk, which leads you back to the pier, for a total walk of 4.4 miles.
The cache is a clip box with many goodies to swap.
The cache is just off the trodden path which is a bit uneven, and sometimes boggy.
Decent footwear is advisable. Please cover up cache properly afterwards, as original container went missing. Thank you.
