Geocache Description:

This should be an easy Park-n-Grab for most. Parking is available within 25 feet of the cache; pulling in parallel, your car can shield you and the cache from any passing vehicles. This used to be a staging area for supplies during the bridge reconstruction.
You're looking for a 3" dia. x 6" long container. Smaller children may have difficulty reaching the cache. Be cautious around the nearby thorny blackberry and wild rose bushes. Please hang container back on rebar when done.

The Hylebos Bridge is a 978 ft. long double leaf bascule bridge over Hylebos Waterway on East 11th Street in Tacoma, WA. Built in 1939 at a cost of $380,000, it replaced a 1925 single leaf Strauss bridge at the same location.
The bridge was damaged in 2001 during an emergency stop that broke the drive shaft. Since then, it has been locked in the upright position to allow for ship traffic. A subsequent fire in 2004 inside the northeast bascule pier caused additional damage to the bridge, including its mechanical and electrical control systems. Then, in August 2005, a bridge inspection revealed that the existing bridge approaches, support structure and fender system were in poor condition and needed to be repaired also.
On June 1, 2012, the bridge reopened to traffic (for both vehicles and vessels) following approximately $23 million worth of repairs and upgrades. Two months later the sign was still in place at the intersection of McMurray Rd. NE & Marine View Drive stating the bridge was closed; no wonder the traffic is so light!

The original ammo can lasted just one year. It has now been replaced with a smaller, less desireable container (which will hopefully equate to a longer lifespan).

Congratulations to 2nd1of3 for the FTF on 8/15/12.
