Stone started in the first episode in 1955, he also continued for the full 20 year run of the program.  He and James Arness (Matt Dillion) were the only characters to be cast for all of the seasons.  Stone did miss 7 episodes in 1971 due to health reasons.  For 16 years on the television program a sign hung over "Doc's" office that read "Dr. G. Adams".  Stone had chosen the name "Galen" as a first name for the ancient Greek physician and researcher.
