This cache series is a celebration of the USA's victories in the 2012 London Olympics. Each cache will be named after gold medal winning athletes/teams or noteworthy accomplishments.
The seventh cache in the series celebrates the USA Women's Gymnastics team's gold winning performance in the Women's Artistic Gymnastics Team All Around competition.
The USA women’s artistic gymnastics team, dubbed the Fab Five, won the United States’ first Olympic gold medal in the women’s all around team final since the 1996 Atlanta games. Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Jordyn Wieber, and Kyla Ross, who is part-Filipina on her mother’s side, all gave strong performances that put the United States ahead of Russia by a little over five points with a final total score of 183.596. Russia scored a 178.530 while Romania received a 176.414, taking the silver and bronze medals respectively.
Kyla Ross contributed her scores for the uneven bars and the beam to Team USA, while sitting out the vault and floor rotations. Out of the 24 women who performed on each apparatus, Ross placed 8th on the uneven bars with a score of 14.933 and 5th on the beam with a score of 15.133. Together, the Fab Five dominated the competition, ranking first in total scores for the vault, beam, and floor while ranking third on the uneven bars.
Though the United States was leading for much of the event, Aly Raisman’s final performance on the floor guaranteed gold for the team.
Congratulations to Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Jordyn Wieber, and Kyla Ross, Olympic champions!
