Geocache Description:

This is my second placed Cache along a path that once was a railroad. Many people know of the railroad tracks that run on the North Side of the Mohawk River in Amsterdam. But once upon a time there was also a train running on the South Side of Amsterdam.

The Railroad was known as the New York West Shore & Buffalo Lines, established in 1883. It ran both freight and passengers trains from Albany to Buffalo. Where a local favorite restaurant stands was where the Freight Station stood; and where an Equipment Supply is, there once was a passenger station. I've included some pictures for you to see how it was in times of old. The railroad company went bankrupt in 1884 and then merged with NY Central Hudson River line. Eventually the passenger line was moved to the north side of the river and the South Side line was used for freight only. Hauling rock from the Stone Quarry as well as service to Businesses in Canajoharie. But eventually as the track was not getting the business it once had, section by section it was abandoned and dismantled. It now has become what we all know as a "Rail Trail". Throughout the state and the country many of the old railroad lines have been turned into bike paths for the public to enjoy. Along the path in different places you can still sometimes find rail stakes or see the rail markers on cement poles. In some places there are still poles standing that once carried telegraph wires. As you walk or ride the path, imagine what it was like to be aboard the train here. This Cache was a very cool clear plastic container with some trades and a tracking bug. Unfortunately it was "muggled" last month. So at first I thought of replacing it with the same kind of container but felt if a muggle took it once, to put another in the same place would be asking for trouble. So it is now a micro and should be just as easy to find and less valuable if lost or stolen.
