Ardud Fortress was built in 1481. Bartolomeu Drágfy, voievode of Transylvania - who also owned the estate of Ardud – builts a stone fortress with four defence tower in the north-west of Ardud. The plan of the fortress was polygonal, with corner ramparts. It was one of the most powerful manorial fortresses in the north of Transylvania, but it was besieged, destroyed and restored many times. In 1630, Károlyi Sándor builds a castle on the grounds of the old fortress, using the walls and the foundation. In the historical documents, Károlyi Sándor is mentioned as the right hand of Rákóczi Francisc the second. Today, there is a single tower remaining, rebuilt in 1896, in neo-Gothic style, the ruins of another one and a labyrinth of cellars which are said to have had a connection to Carei Castle, where one could get on horseback.

Cetatea Ardud a fost construită în anul 1481 de Bartolomeu Drágfy, voievod al Transilvaniei. Planul cetăţii este poligonal, cu bastioane pe colţ. Cetatea a fost una dintre cele mai puternice cetăţi seniorale din nordul Transilvaniei, dar a fost de mai multe ori asediată, distrusă şi refăcută. În anul 1630 contele Károlyi Sándor construieşte un castel pe locul vechii cetăţi, folosindu-se de pereţii şi fundaţia acesteia. În documentele istorice se menţionează că Károlyi Sándor a fost „mâna dreaptă” a lui Rákóczi Francisc al II-lea. Din acel castel se mai păstrează astăzi un turn, refăcut în anul 1896, în stil neogotic, ruinele unui alt turn şi un labirint de beciuri despre care se spune că aveau legătură cu Castelul din Carei, la care se putea ajunge călare.
