Crater formed thousands of years ago.
A short hike down to see this amazing, explosively formed crater. This formed probably less than 10,000 years ago since this area of Mauna Kea was under glacial ice until that time. You can see many layers of lava flows that helped build this majestic mountain. The cache is not in the bottom - but I thought about it. If you want to get a feel for the immensity of the crater, hike down. The hike back up to your vehicle will be a little tougher - you are at 11,000 foot elevation, breath taking!
Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on this planet as measured from its origin - the sea floor. Revered by all who visit, or just look up from below. A 4x4 is highly recommended to reach the parking location. The road is steep and sometimes very rough. Where gloves as the lava is sharp just to maintain footing. Check the weather and have warm clothes, water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and maybe a hat.
While you are here, make it a caching day. There are seven traditional caches on the Mountain beginning at the intersection of Saddle Road. There is a video cache and one or two EarthCaches. Truly a great place to spend the day, watch a sunset, and stargaze - all for free.
