In un territorio ricco di contrasti come la Liguria, stretta tra le montagne ed il mare, il Parco del Beigua - il più vasto parco naturale regionale della Liguria - costituisce uno spaccato esemplare della regione ove è possibile trovare, nel percorrere tratti anche di breve sviluppo, ambienti e paesaggi decisamente diversificati: uno spettacolare balcone formato da montagne che si affacciano sul mare dove natura, storia, cultura e antiche tradizioni costituiscono elementi di straordinario pregio ed interesse.

L'Eremo del Deserto si trova nel Comune di Varazze, alla confluenza tra il Torrente Arrestra e il Rio Malanotte. Il complesso ospita il convento seicentesco dei padri Carmelitani.

Intorno all'Eremo del Deserto si snoda suggestivo percorso botanico ad anello di straordinario valore naturalistico che si estende per quasi due chilometri e mezzo. Tale valore naturalistico risiede nella possibilità di attraversare in breve tempo un'ampia gamma di tipologie ambientali estremamente diversificate. Questo si deve in parte alle caratteristiche climatiche della zona, che permettono la coesistenza di specie tipicamente mediterranee accanto ad alberi tipici dei boschi montani, tra le quali sono inserite numerose specie ornamentali europee ed extraeuropee testimonianza delle numerose modificazioni ambientali provocate dalla secolare presenza dell'uomo.

Il tracciato parte dal piazzale del convento e si snoda per circa 2,3 chilometri all’interno dei resti delle mura dell’antico complesso monastico. E' corredato da una serie di pannelli che illustrano le principali tipologie ambientali che si possono osservare nonché le numerose specie vegetali presenti. Sparse nel folto della vegetazione vi sono sette cappelle chiamate "Romitori" e pannelli in maiolica.

Oltre ad alcuni pannelli generali, sono visibili 50 pannelli riferiti alle specie vegetali più interessanti tra quelle presenti lungo il percorso. Codesti pannelli specifici sono sistemati su leggii in legno e le schede sono riprodotte, a colori, su supporto in alluminio.

Il sentiero si interseca in vari punti con molti altri. In ogni caso, è segnalato da cartelli ritraente una freccia verde. In ogni caso, come per gli altri GeoM&M trail, le cache sono collocate in modo da orientare più facilmente i geocacher. E' percorribile proprio da tutti.

E' quasi interamente ombreggiato e, quindi, particolarmente consigliato per evadere dalla calura estiva. Attenzione però perché a causa degli alberi, il segnale GPS potrebbe degradare considerevolmente. Assolutamente imperativo portarsi dietro gli spoiler e seguire attentamente i suggerimenti proprosti.

Sul piazzale dell’Eremo, ornato da alberi di leccio, è presente un pannello che riporta il tracciato del percorso botanico. A fianco al pannello c'è posto per parcheggiare almeno un'auto. In caso fosse necessario, chiedete ai frati la cortesia di lasciarvi parcheggiare all'interno dell'eremo.

Il percorso ha inizio con una breve salita coincidente con il tracciato della “Via Crucis”. In cima alla salita, ai piedi dei maestosi faggi, camuffata fra le foglie, giace la prima cache [JLX.52] GeoM&M pink trail #1# Faggio. Usate un bastoncino di legno per scostare le foglie e, una volta riposta la cache, per ricoprire nuovamente il contenitore.

Di qui si abbandona il cammino religioso per scendere verso sinistra, tra fitti lecci e pungitopo, sino a raggiungere la cache [JLX.53] GeoM&M pink trail #2#; qui un secondo pannello generale illustra le caratteristiche del bosco di leccio. Il sentiero procede pianeggiante, mentre si alternano pannelli illustrativi di alberi esotici e di piante più comuni. Si incontra quindi la suggestiva fonte di Sant’Elia, dove un tempo i monaci in eremitaggio si radunavano. Qui è visibile un tratto dei resti delle mura nord-occidentali e attorno alla fonte sono visibili il capelvenere e la rara felce florida.

Dopo la fonte, una discesa, lungo la quale si incontra la cache [JLX.54] GeoM&M pink trail #3# Canna, conduce ad una piccola terrazza panoramica affacciata sul torrente Arresta. Lungo l'argine si incontra la cache [JLX.55] GeoM&M pink trail #4# Arrestra . Da qui il percorso segue, in sponda sinistra il corso d’acqua, [JLX.56] GeoM&M pink trail #5# Arrestra 2.

Percorsi 160 metri in discesa sulla strada asfaltata, si ritorna sul sentiero sino alla confluenza con il rio Malanotte e con la cache [JLX.57] GeoM&M pink trail #6# Malanotte, al lato di un pannello contenente una descrizione circa la crescita degli alberi.

Seguono diversi alberi tipici dell’entroterra collinare come il castagno, il nocciolo, il sambuco. Quasi al termine del percorso si incontra un maestoso e secolare tiglio. Quindi si giunge nuovamente al piazzale dell’Eremo, proveniendo da sotto l'edificio religioso.

1) RICOLLOCAZIONE DEL CACHE

Il percorso è oggetto di frequente manutenzione tuttavia, considerato l'ambiente naturale in cui sono nascosti, è facile incorrere in perdite o esposizioni eccessive ai geomuggles. Si prega pertanto di riporre gli stessi esattamente come indicato dalla freccia nelle foto spoiler.

2) LOG

Per consentire un'agevole lettura da parte dei geocacher successivi, si prega di scrivere il log esteso relativo all'intero percorso direttamente nella cache nr 1; si eviterà così di controllare i log nei listing di ogni cache.

A scopo puramente statistico, si invita ad indicare anche il tempo di percorrenza (solo andata).

Preparate un cartello formato A4 con il vostro nickname che userete una volta giunti a fine percorso per una bella foto con voi come protagonisti. Sarà molto gradita! Mi raccomando: SIATE ORIGINALI!

THE BEIGUA PARK

In a land full of contrasts such as Liguria, wedged between the mountains and the sea, the Beigua Park - the largest regional natural park of Liguria - is an exemplary cross-section of the region where you can find, even short stretches along the development, very different landscapes and environments: a spectacular balcony formed by mountains that overlook the sea where nature, history, culture and ancient traditions are elements of extraordinary merit and interest. The CDT (Center of Regional Services Beigua Park) provides services for a fee, transportation and accompaniment, made with qualified personnel (environmental and hiking guides) that has been working in the Park.

THE HERMITAGE OF THE DESERT
The Hermitage is located in the desert of Varazze, at the confluence between the Arrestra River and the Malanotte stream. The complex houses the seventeenth-century convent of the Carmelite Fathers.

Around the Hermitage of the Desert a botanical path winds through picturesque loop of outstanding natural beauty and extends nearly a mile and a half. The natural value lies in its ability to cross in a short time a wide range of environments. This is partly due to the climate of the area, which allows the coexistence of typical Mediterranean tree species alongside the typical ones of mountain forests, among which are included many ornamental species in Europe and elsewhere It is a testimony of numerous environmental changes caused by century-old human presence.

The track starts from the yard of the convent and runs for about 2.3 kilometers inside the remains of the walls of the monastery. It is accompanied by a series of panels illustrating the major habitat types that can be observed as well as numerous plant species. Scattered in the dense vegetation there are seven chapels called "Hermitages" and some tiled panels.

In addition to some general panels, are visible 50 panels referring to the most interesting plant species among those present along the path. These specific panels are placed on lecterns and wooden boards, reproduced in color, mounted on aluminum.

THE ROUTE
The trail intersects with many others at various points. In any case, it is indicated by a sign depicting a green arrow. As for the other GeoM&M trails, the caches are located so as to orient geocachers more easily. It is a trail for everyone.

It is almost entirely shaded and, therefore, particularly recommended to escape the summer heat. But be careful: because of the trees, the GPS signal may degrade considerably. Absolutely imperative to carry around spoilers and carefully follow the suggested hints.

In the square of the Hermitage, decorated with oak trees, there is a panel that shows the route of the botanical path. Aside you can park at least one car. If necessary, ask the friars to park inside their courtyard.

The path begins with a short climb which coincides with the route of the "Via Crucis". At the top of the hill, at the foot of the majestic beech trees, camouflaged among the leaves, lies the first cache [JLX.52] GeoM&M pink trail #1# Faggio. Use a wooden stick to offset the leaves and, once replaced the cache, to cover the container again.

Hence we abandon the religious path to go down to the left, through dense oak and holly, to reach the cache [JLX.53] GeoM&M pink trail #2#; here a second panel shows the general characteristics of the forest of live oak. The trail goes flat while alternating panels illustrative of exotic trees and more common plants. It therefore meets the suggestive source of St. Elias, where once hermit monks gathered. Here you see a part of the remains of the around the north-west walls and the original source maidenhair fern and the rare Florida.

After the source, a slope, along which you find the cache [JLX.54] GeoM&M pink trail #3# Canna (rod), leading to a small terrace overlooking the River Arrestra. Along the bank you meet the cache [JLX.55] GeoM&M pink trail #4# Arrestra. From here the route follows the left bank the river [JLX.56] GeoM&M pink trail #5# Arrestra 2.

160 meters forwards, downhill on the paved road back to the path until the confluence with the Stream Malanotte and cache [JLX.57] GeoM&M pink trail #6# Malanotte, to the side of a panel containing a description about the growth of trees .

Here are several trees typical of the hill as chestnut, hazel, elder. Almost at the end of the trail you will meet a majestic century-old linden tree. So you come back to the Hermitage cpurtyard, coming from under the religious building.

1) REPOSITIONING THE CACHE

The route is subject to frequent maintenance, however, considered the natural environment in which they are hidden, it is easy to incur losses or excessive exposure to geomuggles. So please put exactly the same as indicated by the arrow in the spoilers.

2) LOGS

To an easier reading for the following geocacher, we recommend to write directly an extended log connectedo to the whole trail in cache n. 1. It will avoid a waist of time in readint every cache listing. For a statistical purposes only, please also indicate your travel time (one way). Prepare an A4 size sign with your nickname that you will use once you get to the end location for a nice picture of you. It will be very welcome! BE ORIGINAL!
