Geocache Description:

Mercury

Space Junk

Most people are totally unaware of the massive amount of junk that is passing overhead at any time in low earth orbit, gravity slowly pulling it ever closer, ready to fall to earth at any time.

From the launch of Sputnik into space in 1957 to the present day, there have been over 30,000 objects hurled into orbit around the earth. The majority of the debris from these objects ranges in size from specks 1mm in diameter to basketball size, but there are also much larger pieces up there. Some may remember when Skylab fell to earth in 1979, scattering debris all across Western Australia.

The point is, all of these objects that are within the pull of earth’s gravity will eventually drop out of orbit and fall to earth. Most will burn up as they enter the atmosphere, but a few of the larger pieces will come crashing to the ground, hopefully to land harmlessly in the ocean or in some rural area; possibly in a farmer’s field.

As you approach ground zero from the east, look to the south at the object jutting out of the ground. It bears an amazing resemblance to an early 60’s NASA Mercury vehicle…

Cache is a small lock and lock container with room for small travel bugs or trade objects. Please BYOP.

For the First To Find, there is a small “cache in a kit”. Just add the camo of your choice and hide! We also thought this would be a good place to “launch” a couple Alien Travel Bugs. Please show them some earthly hospitality and help them move along on their missions
