Geocache Description:

It's that time again!  The CCBC Geocachers are pitching in to help clean historic Bread and Cheese Creek in Dundalk, Maryland.  This is a large, community-wide event that happens twice a year in the spring and the fall.  For the third year in a row, our group is hosting a CITO as part of the cleanup, holding a raffle, and manning an information station to help introduce people to geocaching.

We hope you will come out to the Berkshire neighborhood in Dundalk near 7599 Durwood Road on Saturday, September 15.  Registration begins at 7:00 a.m., and the cleanup will begin after a short briefing at 8:00 a.m. and then run until 1:00.

You need not stay the entire time.  Come and lend a hand for an hour or two if you can. Volunteers are needed to help staff the registration booth, to ferry water and trash bags down to the creek, to help pick up full trash bags, and to help break down and clean up at the end of the event.  And, of course, volunteers are needed to do the dirty work of cleaning one of the most polluted waterways in all of Maryland.

Bread and Cheese Creek is an important stream as it empties into Back River which is a major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.  Anything that gets dumped or washed into the creek eventually makes its way to the Bay, affecting the health of the Bay and everything and everyone who lives in or near it.  Each time the creek is cleaned, tons of garbage are pulled out of it, helping to prevent flooding of the surrounding area due to poor drainage and helping to improve water conditions.  You can learn more about the creek, its history, and the efforts to restore it at the website for the not-for-profit group that organizes the cleanup, Clean Bread and Cheese Creek.

We will be raffling off a Garmin eTrex 10 Geocaching bundle that includes the GPSr, cables, manuals, a cache container, geocoin, lapel pin, lanyard, logbook, pencil, and stickers.  This prize is valued at $119.99 and is a great starter unit for the new cacher.  Raffle tickets are $5 each or three for $10.  Tickets will be on sale in advance of the cleanup as well as the day of the event, so if you can't make it, contact the faculty advisor for the group, Mary Jo Garcia (StellalunaG), or any one of the club members to purchase your tickets.

Please note:  the terrain rating for this CITO reflects the fact that getting down into the creek and helping to pull out some of the trash that finds its way there might require hip waters and gloves.  A few pairs will be provided, but please bring your own if you have them.  Also, if you own a 4x4 vehicle, a Bobcat, or a vehicle with a winch, your help is needed.  Large trees, appliances, and other items get wedged in the mud and must be pulled out with mechanical assistance.  Please contact cleanup organizer, John Long, to volunteer your equipment or just bring it the day of the cleanup.  His contact information is available at the website linked above.

Everyone must sign a release form and register upon arriving at the CITO.  Please do not skip this step!  You will be given a bracelet that entitles you to a free lunch after the cleanup, and you can only get this bracelet when you register.  Also keep in mind that there are some dangers inherent in this cleanup.  Don't wade in the dirty water if you have an open wound.  Be careful of wildlife, thorns, glass, and metal.  The CCBC Geocachers and Clean Bread and Cheese Creek are not responsible for injuries that may occur, so use your good judgment. And if you have physical limitations, don't worry.  There are plenty of tasks needing doing on the banks of the creek, too.  Everyone can help!
