Geocache Description:

The second is a series of strange village caches, this cache is not at the listed coordinates. But it is a short walk away within the Indian Grinding Rock State Park. To find it, you will follow the path of the tired Crow when he came to Chaw’se seeking a place to sleep.

An ancient tale from the foothills related by the Miwok Wanderer...

Long ago, Crow was weary and sought a place to sleep with the people. He alighted at the edge of the Chaw’se grinding stone near the Chief, who was standing up-slope. Crow said, “I am so tired. Where can I sleep?” The Chief pointed to a small oak tree that is now extraordinarily tall.

Crow flew off and landed at the pinnacle of the oak tree after only one flap of his giant wings. But even at night the pounding of the people’s pestles in the busy village was too loud for Crow to sleep. So he again asked the chief where he could go. The chief advised the Crow fly three flaps of his wings in the direction of the un-moving star to find a quiet, hidden village deep in the cedar forest where the people do not grind acorns. Crow did so and rewarded the little village with a small pestle. You can find it at his sleeping spot.

Notes:
  • Don’t worry about the distance to the top of the tree. Just measure the distance to the trunk near the ground. This tree was much smaller back when Crow visited.
  • Please preserve the integrity of the puzzle when you compose your logs.
  • Please stay on established paths as much as possible. You can do this for all but a few yards of the trip.
  • Because the container has excellent camouflage, no tree climbing, sifting through undergrowth, or lifting of even moderately heavy objects is needed to retrieve this cache. I would rate this puzzle as a difficulty 3 stars based on the camouflage and size if it were not a puzzle.
  • The distance of the first leg of Crow's journey is less than .1 mile, that is the first leg's length is small enough for a typical civilian GPSr to measure it in feet with reasonable accuracy without resorting to online or PC-based tools. (I used a non-GPSr hand-held device that has an uncertainty of only 1 yard, i.e. 3 times as accurate as a typical geocacher's GPSr to measure that distance. I also confirmed that distance by other means. So you should be confident of getting to the final coordinates if you are careful with your measurements.)
  • Hopefully this will be a quick and fun orienteering puzzle rather than a brute force searching slog. If you find yourself searching an area larger than a narrow north-south oriented 35-ish to 75-ish ft long section, you need to rethink your methods and look for more information in the ancient legend. (The clue should become meaningful once you realize you are near GZ, too.)
