Restin' on North Russell Red Shale Hill Traditional Cache
Restin' on North Russell Red Shale Hill
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The red shale hill of North Russell is unique for many reasons, not the least of which is its fertile iron-rich soil which is ideal for farming and, yes, clay brickmaking. This is an area in which the Queenston shale became uplifted and exposed over many thousands of years of fault activity. Thousands of species live on the hill and many are considered at risk, including rare birds, trees, wildflowers, fungi, and insects. There is also a significant lake there as a result of the former quarrying operations for the valuable red shale used as the basis for the manufacture of building brick. Today, the wetland forms an important rest stop for many migratory birds. The ideal use for the lake and its surroundings is as an ecological preserve, not as a landfill as has been proposed. You are looking for a winter-friendly reclaimed camouflaged pharmaceutical container at the posted co-ordinates and please provide your own writing instrument to sign the log. When standing at the cache, look west, especially in spring and fall, and revel over the beauty of the red soil of North Russell from this peaceful sanctuary!
