Geocache Description:

Camo match stick container.  Log only

In 1942 the Navy leased the Shawnee Municipal Airport from the City,

and insisted that the Regan Flying Service vacate the airport.

The Regan Flying Service had been operating a Contract Flying School for the Army with Piper J-3 Cubs.

The City purchased land 8 miles north of the existing airport & established Shawnee Municipal Airport #2,

according to “U.S. Naval Air Stations of WW2” by Mel Shettle.

Alice and Spacelord both have a deep love of aviation and history.  When you combine it with both creepy and abandoned places we can't be kept away.   For years Spacelord has shot missed approaches to Shawnee Airport helping to train new Chinook pilots in instrument flight.  In a pasture north of town 2 huge old hangers always intrigued him.   A quick check on the internet revealed that this was once a U.S. Navy training site during WWII.  Awesome!  Got to check it out.  We did but cache hunters do not have to trespass to get the cache.  You can see the site on the drive up or by going to Abandoned and Little Known Airfields.com  for more info on this great piece of history and many others nation wide.  Enjoy the creepy and abandoned history and the hunt!
