Dr Alexander MacFadzean was a local physician who came to reside in Ardrossan and during his stay he tended to the sick and dying of the whole community. He saved many lives during the Cholera outbreak of the nineteenth century and aided in improving the living conditions of the poorer residents of the town, as well as the whole area. He was the principal promoter, in the erection of the New Parish Church of Ardrossan in 1844.
He died on January 8th 1849 and the monument which stands on Castle or Cannon Hill, depends which local you talk too, was built and paid for through local subscriptions. It is said that relatives of Dr MacFadzean tried to purchase the monument, dismantle it and ship it to Australia in the 1970s, but the local authority refused to sell. It is now B-listed.
