Located along the Ardwell Pond public walk.
Ardwell pond is a man-made pond near Ardwell Village that was originally built in the late 19th century. After the pond burst its banks and flooded Ardwell village, the dam was re-built around the 1920s to provide hydro electric power to Ardwell House. It is believed that this hydro-electric generator was in use until around 1950.
The remains of the disused building that housed the generator can be found near the cache and it still contains part of the original turbine and iron pipework.
To find the cache, park in the public car park at the given coordinates. Cross the main road and take the path marked 'Public Path - Ardwell Pond Walk'. The cache is approx 200m from the road.
Follow the burn until you see the fish ladder and the little round pool. Turn right across the bridge and the cache is nearby.
The cache is a small plastic lock-top containing a log book and a few trade items.
From the cache location, you can continue walking up through the woods (past the Medieval Ardwell Motte) and on to Ardwell House (18th Century). You can follow the path through the woods around the back of the house for the full circular walk or, alternatively, take a shortcut by bearing left across the front of the house - from here you'll see a signposted path to the left taking you back along the far (south) side of the pond. . Along the way, you'll find my other cache near the old stone bridge. (N.B the path to the South side of the pond is muddy in winter - you'll need decent boots here)
The car park itself is a nice spot by the sea with picnic tables. Good luck and enjoy the walk.
