Geocache Description:

Portumna, County Galway, a Georgian town set on the idyllic banks of the River Shannon, at the head of Lough Derg. The Cache is located on the banks close to the river Shannon. Look for a slipway & a small gate. Portumna is popular for hire cruisers and watersports on the lake, the town also offers an ideal base from which to engage in land-based activities. The town’s name comes from the Irish “Port Omna” , meaning “the landing place of the Oak Tree”),

The cache is a small plastic box hidden on the Shannon banks. This is a very popular spot to visit with lots of parking available. Go through the little gate at the end of the car park & follow the pathway towards Portumna bridge. You might meet people walking their dogs & is a popular spot for fishing to. On route you will see Belisle house on the Tipperary side of the Shannon. A beautiful house with lots of history however it hasn't been lived in for over 30 years.
