I grew up in Akron—the Rubber Capital of the World—so many of the Goodyear sites have happy memories for me. Even though the rubber industry is no longer here, the places are of historical interest. Enjoy them as you search.
During its history, the Wingfoot Lake hangar has been the site of production of helicopter tail cones, aluminum storm doors, tow targets for Navy training, Bell transmission towers and microwave components. Macy’s balloons are sometimes tested here. A total of 239 airships have been built here, the first in 1917. Currently Goodyear owns 3 blimps. The Stars and Stripes is based in Pompano Beach, FL. The Spirit of America is based in Carson, CA. This facility is the home of The Spirit of Goodyear, largest and newest of the fleet. It can often be seen flying over the area. Coordinates N 41 00.464 W 081 21.594 lead you to a parking lot from which you can watch the blimp take off and land when it is in town.
