De Maten ligt ten zuiden van Ter Apel tegen de grens met de provincie Drenthe. Oorspronkelijk hoorde het gehucht bij de Drentse gemeente Emmen. Op 1 januari 1976 'verhuisden' de toen 309 inwoners naar de gemeente Vlagtwedde, vooral vanwege de verbondenheid van de inwoners met Ter Apel.De naam verwijst naar het begrip “Maat”, dat is een stuk weiland dat één maaier met een handzeis in één dag kon maaien.
“De Maten“ liegt südlich von Ter Apel gegen die Grenze mit der Provinz Drenthe. Ursprünglich gehörte es in der Gemeinde Emmen in Drenthe. Am 1. Januar 1976 zogen die 309 Einwohner um in der Gemeinde Vlagtwedde, hauptsächlich wegen der Bündnis der Bewohner mit Ter Apel. Der Name bezieht sich auf „Maat“. Dass ist ein Stück Weide der ein Mann mit eine Sense an einem Tag Mähen konnte.
“De Maten“ lies south of Ter Apel at the border with the province Drenthe. Initially the village belonged to the municipality Emmen in the province Drenthe. On 1 January 1976 the 309 inhabitants moved to the municipality Vlagtwedde, especially because of the solidarity of the inhabitants with Ter Apel. The name refers to “Maat”, which is a piece pasture that one man could mow in one day.
