Geocache Description:

White River Lock and Dam #1

At Riverside Park beside #1 Lock and Dam, a bronze plaque is encased in gray stone blocks. "Navigation of the White River" offers interesting and historical details. If time ease over there to see plaque, but not required as its message is included word for word here. You are seeking a secured ammo box. Of all the dates mentioned below, one of the four-digit years is more important (see hint). PS - For lots more riverboat and Civil War history, well worth time to check out 'Jacksonport ParkCache' a few miles south. Just one of the awesome 50+ Arkansas State Parks!

The first steamboat to navigate the White River to Batesville was the Waverly which arrived in 1831 with Captain Phillip Pennywhitt as master and Captain Thomas Todd Tunstall as pilot. The steamboats provided major transportation for both freight and passengers for Batesville until the coming of the railroad from Diaz in 1883. The railroad terminal was in Batesville and the steamboats continued as principal carriers on the upper White River although they were delayed frequently because of low water.

The Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 provided for 10 locks and dams between Batesville and Buffalo Shoals. Lock and Dam No. 1 was completed in 1905 and No. 2 and No. 3 were built before the project was dropped as the railroad was constructed up the river. The U.S. Army Engineers maintained the locks and dams until 1951. The property here was deeded to the City of Batesville.

Cache had a previous and brief life as "RiversidePark_annex" GC33QRV. Over time its health declined by a city utility project. Eventually archived but now re-done, restocked and revived. Challenging to retrieve without being seen. Well lighted even after sundown. No telling what critters might be found in there!
