There was a previous cache at this spot - Carrickmakeegan Bridge - which was the first cache we found on 03/08/2008 which started us on this mad adventure!
The old cache has since been disabled, so we decided to place one here in honour of our first ever find.
The cache is magenic. BYOP Parking close by.
This tranquil spot was the scene of the Carrickmakeegan Tragedy on August 23, ,1942.
A group of 13 children cycling from Ballinamore boarded a small boat with the permission of the owner. The boat was too small for the large number of passengers and tipped over. The children were pulled from the canal, but despite the best efforts of the boat owner and other passers-by six of them could not be resuscitated. There is a small headstone at the bridge with the names of the six children who lost their lives that day. RIP
