Geocache Description:

This cache is the Dinner part of the Dinner and a Movie series which are all along the same paved path. The movie portion is a Triple feature. The Movies are Star Wars -"The Stormtrooper's Variety Show Movie" - GC1CRHA, Christmas in July! (The Movie) - GC1C7XG and Chinese New Year - The Movie (GC1DAVN).

Chicken Savoy was invented by "Stretch" at the Belmont Tavern in Belleville, New Jersey. The specifics of the Belmont Tavern's recipe are a closely guarded secret. The dish is now served throughout the state and is widely regarded as "The State Dish of New Jersey".

Recipe (the best of many available variations and our favorite):

Ingredients:

  • Whole Chicken, cut into parts or just use the parts you prefer-all with the skin on
  • Olive oil
  • Finely chopped garlic
  • Dried Oregano
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Grated fresh Pecorino Romano cheese
  • Red Wine Vinegar

Instructions:

  1. Brush or rub olive oil all over the Chicken pieces and coat the bottom of the Pan
  2. Place the Chicken, skin side down, in a stove proof skillet or heavy pan - do not crowd the pan or the chicken will not brown
  3. Sprinkle the chicken liberally with (in this order): Garlic, oregano, salt, pepper, cheese
  4. Place the chicken in a pre-heated 500 degree Stove (if your stove goes higher, do the highest setting) for 35 minutes. It may be necessary to OPEN the Windows and Disconnect the Smoke Detector! Alternately, use a disposable baking pan in an outside Gas Grill! That is our choice.
  5. Remove from the stove and pour on a cup of the red vinegar, the dish should sizzle. Remove the chicken and deglaze the pan with vinegar. Serve immediately with the sauce and drippings on top. It is classically served with italian bread to sop up the sauce.
