Geocache Description:

In our early days of caching there was a multi cache here but unfortunately it always seemed to be missing a stage. We were never able to complete the original multi cache. When we noticed it was archived we knew we wanted to place a few caches here. We are finally getting around to placing them! Hope you enjoy the hunt as much as we enjoyed hiding them!!

Jackson International Speedway opened its gates on Saturday night, July 6, 1968. It was a half-mile oval asphalt track that hosted weekly races. Every Saturday night there were three or more divisions of racing included super-modified, late model, mini stock and hobby/road runner. The track was referred to the "Fastest 1/2 Mile Track in the World." NASCAR also used the Jackson International Speedway for three races - two in 1969 and once in 1981. In the early 80s the asphalt pavement began to need repair. The final race at the speedway came unexpectedly in 1984 when several competitors walked out due to the damage to their race cars. The damage came from the asphalt track which by then needed repair badly. The cost of repairs far exceeded what the track owner could recover so the track was sold in 1985. The new management tried to keep the aging track alive but only one year later the track closed. This ended asphalt racing in Mississippi. Around 2000 the stands were removed. Today only the concrete and asphalt remain.
