akgh519 and I were treated to an impressive display of cloud formations during our hike in Arctic Valley. The view always seemed to change as the clouds would first move west, then east, then back again. They would rise and fall within seconds, sometimes totally encompassing the entire mountain. Then seconds later, they would seemingly disappear completely and provide a peek of Denali!
Situated beneath the historic Nike missile site, you may, too, be able to dance with the clouds as they provide intermittent, but impressive views of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and Eagle River. Nearest parking is at the end of Arctic Valley Road in the Alpenglow Ski Area parking lot. There is a $5 parking fee (Alaska State Park Passes are NOT exempt). Gates are closed between 2200 and 0500 hours, so plan accordingly. While visiting, feel free to stop at the snack bar near the parking lot. Staffed by a father-daughter team, they enjoy hearing about geocaching adventures and are appreciative of any CITO efforts in Arctic Valley.
