Toss the Caber Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Rawlington3rd: Thanks to everyone who found this cache!
As I no longer frequent the area, I'm going to archive this one. Getting out there for maintenance is probably not going to happen often enough for poor Toss the Caber to be kept in good condition.

Thanks again guys, and good luck on your geocaching adventures!

Geocache Description:

A cache hidden in lovely Caber Park.  Play some tennis, kick around a soccer ball or play on the play equipment. And, of course, go geocaching.

Hello and welcome to the Caber Toss!

This is a traditional Scottish event involving the tossing of a caber (a large wooden pole, very like a telegraph pole). The aim is not to toss the caber as far as you can, but as accurately – a winning throw would see the caber turn 180in the air, landing on its top end (that is, the one the Scotsman wasn’t holding onto when he threw it) and fall directly away from the thrower. As you can imagine, this is a rather tricky thing to do.

Caber Park in Winston Hills is named after this old tradition. That is not to say that there used to be Scottish Highland Games in Winston Hills, I don’t think that’s ever actually happened here. But if you take a stroll around the streets, paying close attention to the names of the streets and reserves, you may notice that there are a lot of Scottish places or landmarks. It seems someone may have been a bit homesick when naming these streets.
(In fact, all the streets in Winston Hills are grouped by types of names – Biblical figures, Scottish references, great writers, etc. But that’s a story for another cache)

Anyway, enough babble - onto the cache itself!
The cache is a small plastic container located somewhere in Caber Park. Big enough for swaps and TBs. It’s away from many high-muggle areas but you’ll still need a bit of stealth depending on when you go. Please replace the camo and, if you think it needs it, improve it a bit.

Well done to Team Sunderland in all their FTF glory!
