Hraunfossar - Lava Falls - are beautiful and unusual natural phenomena. The waterfall is one of Icelands most precious pearls of nature. It is in the land of Gilsbakki at the edge of Hallmundarhraun. Clear, cold springs of subterranean water seep through the lava and run as tiny waterfalls and rapids into the Hvita River. Hraunfossar have been protected since 1987.The Hraunfossar are situated near Húsafell and Reykholt and lava-tube cave Víðgelmir is close by.
Literally a stone's throw upstream from Hraunfossar, there is another waterfall called Barnafoss. Its name, the ‚Waterfall of the children, comes from an accident which is said to have taken place here in former times. There was a natural bridge over the waterfall and two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths crossing the river on the bridge. Afterwards, the grief-struck mother had the bridge destroyed.
Cache is hidden near the second waterfall, cca 5 minuts walk from parking site.
There is no need to cross any fence, if you are walking from waypoint. Cache is not inside protected area.
Hraunfossar - Lávové vodopády – jsou nádherný a neobvyklý přírodní fenomén. Jsou jedním z nejvíce ceněných úkazů na Islandu. Leží na konci lávového pole Hallmundarhraun, které vzniklo erupcí vulkánu pod ledovcem Langjökull. Prameny prosakují přímo skrze lávu a stékají v malých vodopádech do řeky Hvita. Hraunfossar je od roku 1987 chráněnou přírodní památkou. Hraunfossar najdete nedaleko Húsafellu a Reykholtu, poblíž je i lávová jeskyně Víðgelmir.
Co by kamenem dohodil je další vodopád jménem Barnafoss. Své jméno, Vodopád dětí, získal kvůli neštěstí, které se zde prý stalo v dávných časech. Nad vodopádem se klenou přírodní most, ze kterého spadly dvě děti z nedaleké farmy a v řece se utopily. Jejich zdrcená matka pak nechala tento most zničit.
Keš je ukryta u druhého vodopádu, cca 5 minut chůze z parkoviště.
