The old way to Sortland went through Sigerfjord and you had to drive through Skredbukta (Avalanche-bay), that the name was known for there was a lot of avalanches there. One night it went really bad ...
Natt til 7 mars 1956 ble Skredbukta rammet av et snøskred som skulle vise seg å bety slutten på på mange i den lille bygda. Mennene i bygda var på lofotfiske, men ni barn og fire kvinner omkom da skredet tok halvparten av bolighusene i bygda. Husene ble ble knust til pinneved og feid ut på havet. Bare grunnmurene står igjen der nå idag og kan vitne om den forferdelige vinternatten. 
Samme dag tok et annet ras en kraftstasjon i Svolvær, og to maskinister omkom. Flere mindre ras rammet andre bygder i Lofoten og Vesterålen, og totalt 21 mennesker mistet livet. Tilsammens gjør disse rasene til den verste snøskredsulykkesdagen noensinne i norsk historie. 
The night of March 7, 1956 the village of Skredbukta was hit by an avalanche that would prove to be the end of many of the small village. The men of the village were at Lofoten fishing season, but 9 children and 4 women were killed when the snow-avalanche took the houses in the village. The houses were shattered to pieces and swept out to sea. Only the foundation-walls remain there now today and can witness about that terrible winter night. The same day brought another avalanche a power plant in Svolvaer, and two engineers died. Several small landslides hit villages in Lofoten and Vesterålen, and a total of 21 people lost their lives. Together, this makes it the worst avalanche accident day ever in Norwegian history
