The phrase "Seeing the Elephant" began to be commonly used by the hundreds of thousands of emigrants and gold seekers who made the difficult and perilous 2000 mile covered wagon journey to California between 1841 and 1869. It referred to the challenges, terrible hardships, and life-threatening dangers they faced during their long three month journey and in the gold fields that were difficult to describe.
Learn more about the BLM Adventurer Passport at https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/recreation-activities/nevada , where you'll find detailed instructions on how to download your individual passport (PDF) and place stamps from the caches you find in your book. Each Nevada BLM geocache contains a unique 6-digit hard code and quick code (for smartphone users) that unlock access to an electronic passport stamp for the site. This will be located in the California Trail Interpretive Center and is accessible after finding the cache outside. The first 10 cachers to collect all 6 e-stamps and submit them to BLM Nevada Geocache will be awarded a Commemorative Nevada 150th Copper Medallion. "Today we are to leave this place and home and friends and start upon a long journey, even to the land of gold. 'Tis hard to say the last goodbye even though we know, or at least think, 'tis for the better." - Delia Thompson Brown (1860)
Arriving at the California Trail Interpretive Center, this area marks the beginning of the journey the pioneers took so long ago. The sculptures near the entrance are based on an oil painting, "Advice on the Prairie" by American artist William Tylee Ranney from 1853.
This cache is only available during the business hours of the California Trail Interpretive Center. It has been placed with permission, and the employees know its location. After locating the cache outdoors and signing the log, be sure to enter building and visit the desk to ask about your stamp for your Adventurer Passport. There may be many muggles around at various times, so use caution... Please be respectful of the area. Take time to visit the Center and see the elephant!
