Geocache Description:


De Berlinde kapel ligt op de grens van de parochies Laarne en Kalken. Volgens de legende werd ze op verzoek van de heer van Laarne in 1670 gebouwd met giften van de inwoners van Laarne en Kalken, en werd ze in 1774 vergroot. Het is een der grootste kapellen die uit die periode zijn overgebleven in Vlaanderen.

Waarschijnlijk heeft de kapel niets met de H. Berlindis te maken, maar is die link ontstaan door de plaatsnaam "berre linde". Doordat de H. Berlindis gezien wordt als de behoedster van het vee, werd de kapel vroeger gebruikt bij veeplagen.

Tegen het einde van de 20e eeeuw was de kapel aan een grondige restauratie toe. Ook het nabije kruispunt werd opnieuw aangelegd, waardoor de kapel nu opnieuw vrij staat in de omgeving. In april 2012 werd de volledig gerestaureerde kapel weer ingewijd door Mgr. Luc Van Looy, bisschop van Gent.

De kapel is elke zondag open vanaf april tot en met oktober.


The Berlinde chapel is located at the border of the parishes of Laarne and Kalken. According to legend, it was built in 1670 upon request of the Lord of the castle of Laarne, with donations from the inhabitants of Laarne and Kalken. It was enlarged in 1774, and is one of the biggest chapels that remain from that era in Flanders.

Most probably, the name of the chapel is not derived from Saint Berlindis, but comes from a local name "berre linde" (medieval flemish for "barren lime"). The link with Saint Berlindis appeared afterwards. Since Saint Berlindis is the patron of cattle, the chapel was often used in the past during times of cattle plagues.

At the end of the 20th century, a thorough restauration was required. This was completed in 2012, together with a re-design of the adjacent streets. The chapel was inaugurated in April 2012 by Mgr. Luc Van Looy, bishop of Gent.

The chapel is open to the public every Sunday, from April to October.
