Geocache Description:

Harry Pulliam was the National League president and left a lasting mark on baseball by helping to clean the game of rowdy play and bringing peace between the two leagues.

While he was president of the Louisville Colonels, he “discovered” Honus Wagner while he was playing minor-league ball in Paterson, New Jersey. The Colonels secured Wagner's services for $2,100 and Pulliam himself accompanied the raw, young talent on the train from New Jersey to the Bluegrass State. Honus played for the Colonels until that team was merged with the Pirates.

Harry was unanimously elected as the National League’s president in 1902. He suffered a nervous breakdown from the stresses of the job and took a leave of absence in early 1909. He reassumed his duties on June 28, 1909, but friends noticed that he was moody and uncommunicative. At 1 p.m. Harry left the office and went to his apartment. At 9:30 p.m. Pulliam raised a revolver to his right temple and pulled the trigger. The bullet blew out his right eye and passed completely through his skull, coming out on the left side and striking the wall. At 10 p.m. he was discovered alive and moaning feebly. A physician was summoned who determined that Pulliam was too badly wounded to be removed to a hospital. When the coroner arrived, he leaned over the body and asked, "How were you shot?" The wounded man moaned, and then with an effort said, "I am not shot." Then his head fell back and he lost consciousness. Harry Pulliam passed away on the floor of his apartment at 7:40 a.m. on July 29. He was buried here in Cave HIll on August 2, the first time in history that both NL and AL games were postponed in tribute.

The listed coordinates will take you to the gravesite of Mr. Pulliam. His sibling, Eveline, shares his marker. Her years of birth and death are 18AB - 18CD. The coordinates for the final are N38 14.EF7, W085 42.GH2.
