Geocache Description:

A regular cache hidden on a off-the beaten track location with stunning views over the Elandsjagt, also knows as the Impofu dam.

We decided to take a road trip to explore the surrounding areas around Jeffreysbay and found the board indicating the Elandsjagt dam. Curious, we decided to go explore and after traveling for about 12 km on a dirt road seriously in need of some scraping, we stumbled upon this wonderful and massive dam!

The Elandsjagt dam, more commonly known as the Impofu dam forms one of the five main dams supplying Port Elizabeth with fresh water. It can hold a maximum of 107 million cubic metres of water and has facilities for bass fishing. Some of the more common fish species found in this dam is Large-mouth bass, Small-mouth bass, Bluegill, Blue Curper and Karp.

Although I couldnt find much information on the dam, I did notice that a very interesting study was conducted based on the soil type around the dam. Dispersive soils are soils that dont erode easily, which is what you would want in an catchment area. Why, you may ask? Well, if you have large quantities of alluvial sand or silt eroded from your catchment areas, you would find that these sediments deposit themselves around the dam wall, which not only decrease the capacity of your dam, but also holds a thread for lower laying areas in the event the dam wall might burst (Worst case scenario). I am in no way  a dam expert, but from what I have seen in the past around catchment areas is that quite often the soil around the dam wall starts eroding and before long you may find the water finding weak spots and developing further erosion.

If you are planning a trip to this spot I would recommend you come with at least a 4x2 bakkie or an SUV with good ground clearance. The potholes are endless and difficult to miss, so prepare for a bit of a bumpy ride. Although, you might be lucky and find the road was scraped!Either way, the road to here will take you on a journey through some wonderfull country sights. The cache is hidden on the side of a public road and there is no need to climb through the fence.
