Geocache Description:

This is a cache to find along the wonderful Flint Hills Trail. This old abandoned rail line has now been converted to a walking and biking trail.

Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21 required merit badges, each Scout must complete a project that — on average — requires 167 service hours. In 2008 alone, that translated to $16 million in service (based on the national volunteer hour value of $19.51).

This cache is part of a nationwide geocaching series called "Cache to Eagle" that showcases these special contributions. This particular project is the construction and installation of three limestone benches, by troop 157 from Emporia, Ks, along the Kansa Rail to Trails west of Allen, Kansas. The benches have been placed so hikers traveling from Allen to Bushong will have a place to reset.
The benches coordinates are:
 #1-N38 38.518 W096 12.503
#2-N38 38.744 W096 14.255
#3-N38 38.589 W096 15.009

Over its first 100 years, Scouting has provided millions of hours of service to communities across America. For our 100th Anniversary, we’re celebrating that legacy with special service opportunities through "A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference."

This geocache is in Lyon County, Kansas on the Flint Hills Nature Trail.
Construction on the Flint Hills Nature Trail is an ongoing process with areas opening periodically as development progresses. From the city of Allen going west to Morris County, Lyon County has 10 miles of walk able trail with some parts also bikeable. KANSAS SOCIETY OF LAND SURVEYORS
Breaking the boundaries between surveying and geocaching! This cache is part of the national NSPS Geocaching Project (visit link) sponsored at the state level by the Kansas Society of Land Surveyors, KSLS (visit link) and placed on the Flint Hills Nature Trail with permission from, and cooperation with, Gina Poertner, CHES, and the Kanza Rail Trails Conservancy (KRTC) (visit link) The NSPS Geocaching Project is an excellent opportunity to promote the profession of land surveying as a viable career choice. Geocachers use GPS to find and set things that are not obvious to the eye. Land surveyors also use GPS (among lots of other cool and expensive toys) to find and set things that are not obvious to the eye. Geocachers try to get the best GPS accuracy possible; surveyors use GPS equipment with accuracy that boggles the mind. Geocachers may look for bench marks, whereas surveyors often set bench marks. The two activities have many similarities.
