Stewardship is "the careful and responsible management of something entrusted in one's care".
Flower's Cove signed a Municipal Species at Risk Stewardship Agreement in 2002. The agreement represents a formal public committment by the community and the province to act together to conserve and protect the Limestone Barrens within their jurisdiction. By signing a Municipal Species at Risk Stewardship Agreement, the town and residents became stewards of the habitat within the Stewardship Zone and committed to using a stewardship ethic in all decisions involving existing habitat to minimize and eliminate the effects of human activity on species at risk within the town.
The Town of Flower's Cove contains significant Fernald's braya (threatened) and Long's braya (endangered) plant populations which are both endemic to the island of the Newfoundland. That means that they are found no where else in the world! Besides for the braya plants numerous other rare plant species are also found in Flower's Cove including Wild Chives, Newfoundland Orchid, and Rock Sedge among many many others. Flower's Cove is a hot spot for rare plant species!
The conservation of species at risk habitat depends not wholly on conservation plans or regulations but on the stewardship ethic of residents and visitors like yourself!
