Geocache Description:

I hope this cache complements those of swanhilian (At the Black Gate) and reverb (Lake Tyrrell), plus my own Dog Netting fence, to form a Tyrrell quadrella. You'll be seeking a small Sistema with swaps and log. Please BYO pen.

GZ will have you standing in the bed of the Tyrrell Creek, about two-thirds of the way along the 120km journey from its beginnings at the Avoca River near Charlton to its terminus at Lake Tyrrell. Don't be alarmed however; it's likely you'll remain safe and dry. Had you been here in January 2011 it would have been another matter as the Tyrrell was experiencing an epic flood. You'd have been out of your depth and hanging on for dear life. In September 2010 the creek ran for the first time in fourteen years, inundating the Birchip Cropping Group's field day site south of Culgoa and turning into a 500m wide torrent inside three hours. The January 2011 event flooded much of the township of Culgoa.
The Tyrrell Creek was one of the main highways for the pastoral occupation of the Mallee. In 1847 W. E. Stanbridge, manager of the East Charlton run  pushed down the creek to establish the Tyrrell run east of the lake. The creek was then known as Comberndil.
Tyrrell Creek roughly parallels the Calder Highway between Charlton and Sea Lake, crossing the highway in four places.
Old Racecourse Road, which exits the Calder Highway nearby, recalls the early days of the Kaneira District Racing Club, formed in 1895,  whose first meetings were held in the Racecourse Paddock just east of the cache. In the nearby township of Kaneira (now Culgoa)  a wire netting arch was constructed across the main street with pine branches forming the words "Erin Go Bragh" and "Welcome". Traffic passed underneath on its way to the race meeting.
