Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a walk along the Sankey Valley canal.

 

The path in question runs alongside the Sankey Canal, which was built in 1757 to transport coal, iron ore and corn from the St Helens area down towards the Mersey. As such it can be considered this country's first canal of the industrial age. Raw sugar was the commodity which travelled in the other direction, to the sugar works at Earlestown.

Nowadays the Sankey Canal is being restored and reopened gradually, with the Sankey Canal Restoration Society taking a lead. Close to the cache site you can see where the intact section of the canal peters out. The restorers have a lot of work to do before this canal once again becomes navigable along its whole length, but in the meantime it provides a pleasant route for walkers and cyclists but do not expect to see any canal boats as it is a dead end at both ends. What you may well see though are some quite beautiful water lillies.

This cache is the second in a series of three caches to commemorate the Red Rose Ramble, a 100Km walk from Warriington to Lancaster on July 4th and 5th 2009. A team of 10 intrepid walkers will cover the whole distance in 24 hours... consisting of, and ably supported by, several NW Cachers!
The cache itself is a small plastic film cannister type of container please bring your own pen.
