Geocache Description:

Warren Lane serves the farms and other dwellings along it's course and is situated in the village of The Lea with it's other end arriving at Aston Crews.  The village of The Lea straddles the A40 between Ross-on-Wye and Gloucester.

The origin of the name is forgotten but a Farm mid-way along the lane bares the same name, Warren Farm. The most likely origin of the name can be found in the following paragraph taken from 'The History of Aston Ingham, Aston Ingham Through the Ages' written by Mrs M E Watson, my Aunt:

[Along the lane] can be found Warren Farm, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. So perfectly has this old building been cared for that it is now scheduled as an Ancient Monument. The farm was probably so named from the Warren land on which it was built - as distinct from the Royal Forests and Chases. The hunting rights in the Forests belonged solely to the Monarch and vicious were the penalties meted out to anyone caught poaching - whatever their 'bag' might be. The Chases were also owned by the Monarch but he would grant the hunting rights, as a favour to a nobleman, in return for services rendered. The same laws concerning poaching which governed the Forests were applied in the Chases. The Warrens were more open country - less rich in game and the right to hunt them was given by the noble owners to favoured tenants. They were allowed to both breed and catch any conies (rabbits) on the Warrens - a valuable source of meat for their families and no doubt a good trading commodity too.

There was also a mill at the lowest point of the lane, one of a number that were situated along Rudhall Brook. There are good views towards Linton Ridge where Ridge Raider is placed (GC39424) and Linton Church where there's a Church Micro (GC3W92V).

The cache is a 35mm film canister which contains the log and a small pencil should you forget your pen! In wet weather the road occasionally gets a little flooded here so you may need to tread carefully!
Thanks to the Parish Council for allowing this cache to be placed.
