I feel the need ... the need for speed (AES) Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,

Geocache Description:

I feel the need ... the need for speed
AES: Ålesund Airport, Vigra

Congratulations to First Finder: Oblako

Beskrivelsen i denne cache er på engelsk av hensyn til internasjonale reisende.

The title "I feel the need ... the need for speed" is a quote from one of my all time favourite movies featuring F-14 Tomcats and F-5 Freedom Fighters (the latter starring as MIG-28s in the movie) - you probably guessed the title already.

This series of caches is a tribute to all the airports around the world.

Plane on final approach to Vigra Airport

VIGRA AIRPORT
Ålesund airport is located on the small island of Vigra - connected to Ålesund by an underground tunnel. The airport was inaugurated in 1958 as the very first airport in the Møre & Romsdal region. In 1986 the new extended runway was opened as well as a new terminal building.
In 2009 the airport was further upgraded with new arrival and departure terminals. The international departure terminal was upgraded in 2010 due to an increasing number of international flights.

The airport has almost 1.000.000 passengers per year and is operating close to peak capacity.

Vigra Airport has one runway: 07/25 which is around 2200 meters long and is only CAT I equipped.

On September 8th, 2011 the tall radio mast (Vigra Kringkaster) close to the runway - a known landmark for the island of Vigra - was demolished. I was there to witness the event. A large area around the 232 meter tall mast (it was shortened in from 242 meters in 1997 due to the airport) was evacuated before the explosion and a marine destroyer lay in the sea to keep ships at a distance.
The mast fell like a straw in a few seconds ... and a landmark from 1952 is now history. Actually for the second time - since the original 106 meter tall mast was destroyed in April of 1940 by German airplanes during World War II.
