Hackley's General Store was opened in 1902 by Lewis Eugene and Rosalie Hackley. They sold general merchandise, feed for farm animals and butchered their own livestock. The original store was across the road from the present location and was destroyed by fire. In 1934, Louis Eugene Hackley built a new store on his property in the current location. His son Graham began managing the store in the late 1930's. Graham married Dorthy Zinn, also from Amissville, in 1947. They became the Owners in 1955 when Rosalie Hackley passed away. The Hackley's were also farmers with cattle, crops and a garden. They lived next door to the store in a carefully tended white farmhouse where Graham had been born. The store has been an important meeting place and news center for Amissville and the surrounding area for generations. The store was operated by the Hackley family until 2008. Even though the large gas stove is no longer in the center of the store, the store is still a common gathering place for locals.
