The NEEDLE HOLDER...
Needle Holders are used when suturing tissue, I have seen them misused for other reasons, but their intended purpose is to suture two sides of tissue together until the body has had time to heal itself. Sutures and Needle Holders come in various types and are used based on the type of surgery and surgeon preference. Like clamps, Needle Holders work with scissor like motions, but have shorter jaws. The needle is placed at the tip of the Needle Holder normally perpendicular to the jaws. Normally you use a Needle Holder that corresponds to the size of the needle being used to pass the suture through the tissue. Suturing is not only done to close the skin. You may need a needle and Needle Holder so small to attach a blood vessel to the heart to bypass a clogged artery, or reattach the muscle to the eye. Or at the other end of the Needle Holder spectrum you may use a 12 inch long Needle Holder to suture bowel together in a deep abdomen. As with a lot of surgical instruments there are also Needle Holders that are made specifically for laparoscopic surgeries.
So Needle Holders play an important role and different aspects of surgery, not just to suture up a cut in the Emergency Department... Well now that you have a little insight into another tool used in surgery, I will tell you that this series is based on something I am very passionate about. Not only has it been the main source of my income for almost 2 decades, it also has shown me the best and worst of the human race....
