Alcafozes, é uma aldeia, no concelho de Idanha-a-Nova, o segundo maior do país em área.
Alcafozes, is a village in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, the second largest in area in Portugal.
Conhecida por terra das "gaiolas mouriscas", de onde deriva o seu nome. Presume-se que tenha sido fundada, no ano de 715, pelos Árabes, quando ali resolveram construir abrigos para os rebanhos, numa época (séc VIII) . Mas, anteriormente tanto os Lusitanos como os Romanos passaram por aqui.
A Igreja da Misericórdia trata-se de um edifício do final do século XIX, com nave única, coro-alto, capela-mor mais estreita, com sacristia adossada, no lado N. Fachada principal com vãos simples, rematada em empena, com campanário sobre o lado S.. Interior com coberturas de masseira e existência de púlpito e 3 retábulos revivalistas, neo-rococó e neo-neoclássicos.
Próximo localiza-se o Cruzeiro de São Marcos, constituído por 3 cruzes em granito.
O orago da igreja é o Senhor dos Passos. Na Páscoa realiza-se uma representação dos Passos da Paixão de Cristo, de cariz popular e bastante interesse etnográfico, no qual o destaque é dado à personagem bíblica de Verónica, representada sempre por uma alcafozense.
Verónica foi uma mulher piedosa de Jerusalém que, comovida com o sofrimento de Jesus ao carregar a cruz, deu-lhe seu véu para que ele pudesse limpar seu rosto. Jesus aceitou a oferta e, após utilizá-lo, devolveu-o à Verônica. E então, a imagem de seu rosto estava milagrosamente impresso nele.
Known as the land of "cage Moorish", from which it derives its name. Presumed to have been founded in the year 715, by the Arabs, when there decided to build shelters for livestock, at a time (VIII century). But previously both Lusitanos as the Romans passed through here.
The Misericórdia Church it is a building of the late nineteenth century, with a single nave, high choir, chancel narrower, with sacristy addorsed, on the N. Main facade with simple spans, completed in gable with bell tower on the S. side. Interior with three altarpieces and pulpit, in neo-rococo and neo-neoclassical styles.
Nearby is the Cross of San Marcos, consisting of three crosses in granite.
At Easter there is a representation of the Stations of the Passion of Christ, in which the emphasis is given to the biblical character of Veronica, always represented by a local.
Veronica was a pious woman of Jerusalem who, moved by the suffering of Jesus to carry the cross, gave him her veil. Jesus accepted the offering and after using it, returned it to Veronica. And then the image of his face was miraculously imprinted on it.
