Geocache Description:

A multi-cache exploring the lower reaches of Deepdale. A great short walk in itself, or a good way to start off routes up Fairfield or St Sunday Crag.

From its lower reaches, Deepdale gives spectacular views of Place Fell and Angle Tarn Pikes. However the real beauty of this little walked valley lies in its upper reaches; beyond the drumlin fields the glory of Fairfield’s northern crags is laid open to view. The walk along the valley to reach the ridge linking St Sunday Crag with Fairfield at Deepdale Hause is well worth the effort, especially if you plan to go on to Fairfield over the rock pinnacle of Cofa Pike. Unless you are comfortable with rough scrambling, do not be tempted by the tracks heading off to Greenhow End and Black Crags - these do not provide easy ways up to Fairfield! Bonzo was a male pet sheep who lived on this farmland. When we first stayed in the area he was a youngster, and we fed him biscuits - Ginger Nuts were his snack of choice. He would come to our cottage and knock on the window asking for food! As a pet he avoided the usual fate of male lambs, and lived to a ripe old age. The Walk - Stage One (N54˚ 31.266, W002 55.766) Parking is available for 6-8 cars at Stage One. Visit the bus stop and take note of the 11 digit information line telephone number: 2nd digit = A 5th digit = B 8th digit = C 3rd digit = D 4th digit = E [Updated July 2019 as the original clue has been removed!] Stage Two is at N 54˚ 30.(A-B)(B+C)B, W002 56.D(B-C)(D-E). From Stage One, turn up the lane by the B&B sign for Deepdale Hall and follow the track between the walls. Turn left at the top through the kissing gate, then follow the path behind Deepdale Hall and Wall End farmhouses to Stage Two. As you pass Wall End, you will cross an impressive stone clapper bridge over the beck. Just uphill from here is a recently refurbished sheepfold, close to the stream, that was used for washing the sheep. The odd stone structure inside the fold is the work of the repairer, and pays homage to Andy Goldsworthy who has created similar artwork across the rural north of England. At Stage Two, you need to check the information given on the outside of the container to give you the coordinates for Stage Three. The bottom line includes three sets of numbers: call these ‘FG’ “HIJ’ and ‘KLM’. Stage Three is at N 54˚ 30. (I+J)(H-G)(L+M), W 002˚ 56.(J+M)(H-I)(G+L). Here you will find what you need for the final cache. Please look after it carefully, and return it afterwards. Many thanks to Chris, Jimmy and Robyn for letting us place the cache in our favourite location.
