Cache is located in the University of Limerick Campus, enjoy a pleasant walk over the Living Bridge which links both the main campus which is in Co Limerick and the Northbank Campus which is in Co. Clare. This campus is home to the Health Sciences Building, Irish World Academy of Music, Graduate Medical School, Pavillion and new all weather playing pitches.
In the Northbank Campus, the Health Sciences Building defines the eastern enclosure of the Foothold Piazza with a west facing sun scoop to make this outdoor public space environmentally attractive and open to southerly and westerly views. The accommodation is laid-out either side of the internal street link to all the identity areas to encourage contact and communications under shelter. The three to four storeys stepped cross-section strengthens the weather shield and wind deflector form in response to the prevailing winds and climate. It provides orientation and express shelter.
The upper floors enjoy significant vistas to the east, south and west. From the Clare’s Hills and the upper reaches of the Shannon onward to the tidal lower reaches of the river and to Limerick city. The form invites the sun path to bathe all but a minor north facing elevation and provides natural ventilation.
The Health Sciences Building accommodates the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, and the Department of Clinical Theraphies, with independent Physio, Speech and Occupational Therapies combined as a totalling 6,186m2 Shared teaching and seminar spaces, main lecture theatre and Biology laboratories complement dedicated clinical and physiotherapy practice labs, academic offices, computer labs and research spaces. A cafeteria and kitchen provide the focal social spaces overlooking the south facing natural setting along the river Shannon.
The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance Urban Concept (IWAoMD ) mirrors the existing Foundation Building Foyer alignment with Plassey Mill Tower South of the Shannon. The Living Bridge ties both alignments together and completes this Urban Design triangle thus people share the same visual reference North and South of the Shannon to make-up for the visual separation caused by the mature landscape belt boarding the Shannon.
The IWAoMD Building Concept is conceived as a visual termination to the Living Bridge crossing and forms a Street between itself and the adjoining existing Health Sciences Building. The raised superstructure of the 80 seats Drum theatre above all else creates the focal point when travelling North; by cladding it in copper shingles, it glows as it responds to the sunpath. The building shelters the arrival Piazza from the Northerly winds and, by glazing the South elevation at the point of entry, the multi storey Foyer and cafeteria spaces visually link the building, arrival Piazza and Living Bridge into sequence of inviting dedicated social spaces. The Foyer is conceived as a stage set, an internal street, a communal social meeting space linking both theatres access and each of the three floor levels while tying-in with the Cloister circulation which “wraps” the upper floors teaching accommodation around the Theatre spaces at the heart of a Céili of support teaching accommodation.
The “Céili” layout symbolises the Creative Community of individuals and the village as in the title of the competition brief – The Irish Performing Arts Village” .
The Pavillion is Limerick's newest and most spectacular multi-purpose venue. This extensive facility includes function & meeting space, a relaxing and stylish bar which is complemented by the spectacular outdoor veranda.
The Northbank campus is also home to The New Graduate Medical School which opened in September 2012 and attracts overseas Post Graduate Medical Students.
