Geocache Description:

A gambol around Grittleton. Some are accessible to wheelchair users. There are a couple of stiles and footpaths across fields. Part of your gambol will take you along the Fosse Way, a Roman road which starts in Exeter and travels diagonally across England to Lincoln. The village is in Wiltshire in the area of South Cotswolds, an area of outstanding beauty. For further information on the area see related link, above.

Further along the Fosse Way and it's possible to see that the road is pretty straight. Over the length of the route though, there is rarely more than 6 miles (10km)in a straight line.

The word Fosse is derived from the Latin fossa meaning ditch. For the first few decades after the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43, the Fosse Way marked the western frontier of Roman rule in Iron Age Britain. It is possible that the road began as a defensive ditch that was later filled in and converted into a road, or possibly a defensive ditch ran alongside the road for at least some of its length.

Just about 2000 years ago, in this area, the Roman Army used this track as a direct route from Exeter in the South to Lincoln in the North, some 182 miles. The Fosse Way was the route which linked Exeter (Isca Dumnoniorum) to Lincoln (Lindum Colonia) in Lincolnshire, via Ilchester (Lindinis), Bath (Aquae Sulis), Cirencester (Corinium) and Leicester (Ratae Corieltauvorum).
