Geocache Description:

A gambol around Grittleton. Some are accessible to wheelchair users. There are a couple of stiles and footpaths across fields. Part of your gambol will take you along the Fosse Way, a Roman road which starts in Exeter and travels diagonally across England to Lincoln. The village is in Wiltshire in the area of South Cotswolds, an area of outstanding beauty.

The Fosse Way is of Roman origin. Fosse being the Latin word for ditch.

The Fosse Way

Just about 2000 years ago, in this area, the Roman Army used this track as a direct route from Exeter in the South to Lincoln in the North, some 182 miles. The Fosse Way was the route which linked Exeter (Isca Dumnoniorum) to Lincoln (Lindum Colonia) in Lincolnshire, via Ilchester (Lindinis), Bath (Aquae Sulis), Cirencester (Corinium) and Leicester (Ratae Corieltauvorum).

Todays users may include Off-Road fans who may bring their 4X4 or other Off Road vehicles with them. Mostly a peaceful place though and you'll more likely just hear the tractors in the fields and the birds in the air. This section of the Fosse Way forms part of the boundary between Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
WARNING: Please keep animals and children away from any ferns you might be near.
