Geocache Description:

A gambol around Grittleton. Some are accessible to wheelchair users. There are a couple of stiles and footpaths across fields. Part of your gambol will take you along the Fosse Way, a Roman road which starts in Exeter and travels diagonally across England to Lincoln. The village is in Wiltshire in the area of South Cotswolds, an area of outstanding beauty.

The Fosse Way is of Roman origin. Fosse being the Latin word for ditch.

The Fosse Way

Just about 2000 years ago, in this area, the Roman Army used this track as a direct route from Exeter in the South to Lincoln in the North, some 182 miles. The Fosse Way was the route which linked Exeter (Isca Dumnoniorum) to Lincoln (Lindum Colonia) in Lincolnshire, via Ilchester (Lindinis), Bath (Aquae Sulis), Cirencester (Corinium) and Leicester (Ratae Corieltauvorum).

The Roman Army kept to the traditional clothing as the Britons kept to theirs. However, together with the Army came administrators and others who supported the garrisons. The Toga would have a special place in their wardrobe. For socialising in town, or at meetings, Roman men of higher status might add a toga over the tunica , the under garment worn. The early Roman Toga was very voluminous, required huge skill in draping it and made really active pursuits difficult. Essentially this made it a garment mostly of the upper classes such as senators. Any Roman man who wanted to be elected as a magistrate had to don a spotless white toga -The Toga Candida.

The modern word candidate comes from the Latin Toga Candida meaning bright. Even 2000 years ago a political candidate running for office had to look spick and span. Clothes matter when someone wants to be taken seriously and respected.

The Fosse Way ends for a moment as this section is crossed by a fairly busy road, leading to the M4. It sits on part of the boundary between Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
WARNING: Please keep animals and children away from any ferns you might be near.
