Geocache Description:

This is part of an urban cache series through the Neighborhood of the Arts. The City of Rochester recently collaborated with the community and many NOTA institutions to enhance the streetscape with artist-made street furniture, amazing large-scale sculptures by local and national artists, a sculpture park on the grounds of the Memorial Art Gallery, Poets Walk and Story Walk with integrated cell phone tours and much more. PLEASE DON'T TAKE PAMPHLET/CACHE LOG!

This is part 3 of a 5 part treasure hunt through the Neighborhood of the Arts. Part 3 includes 2 caches — and they are both physical caches —  housed in a metal box on a pole, holding the contents above the snow for a year-round experience. Inside is a more typical geo-caching container with a little booklet. The booklet includes the logbook and a story about something interesting about this place — perhaps a story about the characters who originally helped create that institution or what was built there or an invention. If possible, you should bring a pen with you — any pen will do, but a pen is better than a pencil for the waterproof paper. We'd stock them in the boxes but pens don’t hold up very well outside in colder weather. [If you look closely, you may see a similar, unlisted cache across the street!] This series of caches was created by the City of Rochester as part of its Art Walk Extension Enhancements Project (completed October 2012). During the planning, the City held interactive design workshops where residents were encouraged to co-create this important public space. This part of the project responds to some of the things they suggested or requested: they wanted a treasure hunt, a family friendly activity that would lead visitors to explore the Neighborhood of the Arts and illuminate the history of various sites. The Democrat and Chronicle New Media Group held a YouNews! Academy and journalists worked with students, historians, and the various community institutions to create the stories that you’ll find included in the caches. As you explore the Neighborhood of the Arts through geocaching, you might enjoy the many other experiences this area has to offer. You’ll find many cultural institutions and culture-based businesses, artist-made street furniture, a sculpture by Cliff Garten in the middle of Goodman Street at Village Gate (also shops and restaurants!), a sculpture by Living Lenses at the Rochester Museum of Science and History (restaurant inside), a free sculpture park on the grounds of the Memorial Art Gallery (restaurant inside) bordered by Poets Walk on University Avenue and Story Walk on Goodman Street (both with integrated cell phone tours), the George Eastman House, Writers & Books, coffee shops and other good places to grab a bite to eat.
