This series takes you along the Cuttlefish Way, a coastal dirt road exploring the diverse animal and plant life along the way. Bring your camera, water (no shops) and a BBQ if you have the time.
Every year between May and August the giant Cuttlefish (Sepia Apama) migrate through the Spencer Gulf to a hand full of places to breed then die. The main breeding ground is between False Bay and Fitzgerald Bay near Whyalla. From the surface there seems to be little happening but below the surface the activity is dynamic, with courtship in full swing the females laying their eggs in clutches under the rock ledges and the males competing for the favours of the smaller females. The males can grow to a metre in length and over 5kg. This cache is a reminder of what it used to be like along here and also because I recognised a particular bush as I drove past.
