Flaggy Fields 3 - Green Lung Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RedwoodWarriors: This cache used to be just slightly off the path but now there is a new, well-worn path right next to it that leads to a small clearing that has developed close by and which seems to be a favourite drinking (or whatever) spot for local youths. It's probably no coincidence that the cache has now been muggled for the first time. Given how GZ has changed we have decided that we don't think this is a suitable spot to bring cachers to and so we are archiving it. Thanks to all who have visited over the years.

Geocache Description:

A series of 4 caches on a 1.5-mile walk on good footpaths, with a small amount of road walking. It can be combined with other caches in Orrell to make an easy 3-mile circular walk.

This is one in a series of four caches from close to Orrell Water Park and Orrell station to Redwood Park in the Lamberhead Green end of Orrell. There is ample, free off-road parking at the Water Park and on-street parking at Milton Grove at the other end. There are several more caches in and close to Redwood Park, and along Brook Lane and Hall Lane, which would make a 3-mile circular walk back to the Water Park.

Flaggy Fields 3 – Green Lung is placed in a tiny woodland squeezed between the back of houses and the M58/M6 motorway interchange. A sideshoot of the footpath goes straight on after the M58 bridge and after a short distance reaches the main A577 Orrell Road. But the main Flaggy Fields path turns right after the M58 bridge and cuts down directly behind the houses. The wooded area used to be fenced off but in recent years it has been opened up, with a path running through it and the woodland managed to provide a tiny green lung to absorb some of that carbon monoxide and release oxygen into the atmosphere – in addition to providing a home for birds and other wildlife. It's not big, but in its way it is clever. Little green areas like this, combined, provide an invaluable resource in this overcrowded country of ours.
