Bison @ Ryckman Family Cemetery Traditional Cache
Bison @ Ryckman Family Cemetery
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Cache is a bison tube located in the Ryckman Family Cemetery, c1824. Please bring your own writing instrument and replace as found.
Parking can be found on Regina Street, and you can access the cache via an opening in the fence behind the Honda dealership. You can also choose to walk on the other side of the fence from Regina St. straight to the cemetery.
The oldest known burial in this cemetery is for John Oliver Ryckman, in 1824. At one time this cemetery was surrounded by an iron fence, though this has now been replaced by a chainlink one.
The cemetery contains a rare example of a box, or alter tomb belonging to Samuel Ryckman. The last burial in this small enclosure was for former Burlington Mayor, John Oscar Ryckman.
In 1979, the cemetery became the responsibility of the City Of Hamilton. Five readable stones exist, the rest are broken and in a state of disrepair, partially caused by vandals and partially by reckless mowing of the cemetery property by city maintenance crews. It contains 18 monuments.
The close proximity of the nearby subdivision development seriously threatens the future of this pioneer cemetery.
Congratulations to geO_Kacher and Scarpetta3 on the FTF!
