Cache Details:
The cache is located about half way between Newark and Glascow not far off of Old Baltimore Pike. Woodland Park is at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac. There is a small playground and much of the park is bordered by the Christina River.

Description:
Less than a mile away from the cache is the location for The Battle of Cooch's Bridge, the only significant military action during the Revolutionary War in the state of Delaware. You may drive right by this location on Old Baltimore Pike as you go for this cache. (See reference waypoint)

After landing in Maryland on August 25 as part of a campaign to capture Philadelphia, the seat of the Continental Congress, British and German forces under the overall command of General William Howe began to move north. On September 3, 1777 about 700 American troops including a select group of 100 marksmen under General William Maxwell set up a classical ambush at Cooch’s Bridge, first encountering Hessian troops under General Knyphausen

Protected by the thick woods and heavy brush south of the bridge, the Americans waited for the lead forces of the British Army.Using tactics learned from Native Americans, the Americans continually fired, moved and reloaded as they moved northward toward the bridge.

Finally, as they neared the bridge, the American forces, running out of ammunition, were able to hold the British for a couple onslaughts, but out-gunned and out-manned the Americans were forced to make a hasty retreat as the British better organized their attack. This action gave General Washington additional time to prepare for the major Battle of Brandywine that occured a week later.
