Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of caches to highlight bits and pieces of local history in South King County and beyond.

In 1939, Rose Wilcox and her sister Sarah purchased an abandoned restaurant called Mesmer’s and renamed it Rose’s Hi-Way Inn.  The description accompanying the Tacoma Times photo from June 1939 says: “Modern in every way with indirect lighting, a white cellutex interior marbleized in blue, and chromium and bronze trim.”

The restaurant was famous for its family-style fried chicken dinners.  In 1939, a chicken dinner cost $0.75 for four pieces of chicken, potatoes, tea biscuits and coffee. The chickens were originally raised behind the restaurant.

Wilcox served the restaurant's famous fried chicken, battered and cooked in two-foot wide black skillets for 30 years, before it changed hands.  Although the restaurant changed hands over the years and other menu items were added, the fried chicken remained.  One 1998 newspaper article states that they served 350 servings of fried chicken on one Sunday.

My parents ate at Rose’s on their first date in the early 1960s.  In the 1990s, my husband and I would eat here on occasion.

The restaurant closed in March of 2003, after it was gutted by fire.  All that remains now is a vacant lot and a large rose planter that was located at the base of the sign.

This is a log only cache. The cache originally had a secondary waypoint with a container for trade items, but due to container being muggled numerous times, it has been removed. Disregard the additional coordinates listed on the top of the log.
